Twelve AI coding assistants ranked on live pricing, free-tier limits, IDE support and models, all read off vendor pages on 28 August 2026. Compare and pick one.

84% of developers are using or planning to use AI tools in their development process, up from 76% a year earlier, and 51% of professional developers use them daily, according to the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey of 33,662 respondents. The same survey found more developers actively distrust the accuracy of AI output (46%) than trust it (33%). That gap is why the AI powered coding assistant is still a separate category from the autonomous agent: the tool suggests, you approve.

The CodeCourier team read every vendor's own live pricing, quota and model pages on 28 August 2026 and ranked the twelve AI coding assistants you can actually adopt today. Five names you would have shortlisted eighteen months ago have since been acquired, deprecated or moved behind an enterprise quote, and this page says so plainly.

How we chose the best AI coding assistants

There is no single best AI coding assistant, because the variable that matters most is the editor you already work in. What this page can do is tell you what each option costs, what its free tier really caps, and where it will disappoint you. Every figure below was read off the vendor's own live page on 28 August 2026.

  • Assistant mode only. We reviewed inline completions, next edit suggestions, in-editor chat and targeted refactors. Where a product also ships an unattended agent, as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Devin Desktop and JetBrains all do, that mode is out of scope and covered in our ranking of the 15 best AI coding agents in 2026.
  • Free-tier honesty. We checked what each free plan rations: completions per month, chat requests, model quality, seat count or editor availability. "Free" means four different things across these twelve products.
  • Entry price for one engineer. What a single developer pays to get past the free cap, including whether the vendor forces an annual commitment or a sales call.
  • Editor coverage. Whether it installs into the editor you have or requires you to adopt a new one. Switching editors is the largest hidden cost in this category.
  • Model access and context. Which models the plan reaches, whether the good ones are gated to a higher tier, and whether the vendor publishes a context window at all. Most do not.
  • Deployment control. Whether self-hosted, VPC or air-gapped operation exists, and on which plan. For regulated teams this filter eliminates most of the list before price is considered.
  • Category stability. Whether the vendor is still investing in the assistant or has published a deprecation notice. Four of the twelve have.

Now let's review each AI coding assistant tool in detail.

1. GitHub Copilot

The GitHub Copilot AI coding assistant is the default for most engineers in 2026, and the reason is distribution. Its plans page lists availability across GitHub, VS Code, Visual Studio, Xcode, JetBrains IDEs, Neovim, Eclipse, Raycast, SQL Server Management Studio and Zed, which is wider than anything else here.

Pricing on github.com as of 28 August 2026: Free at $0, Pro at $10 per user per month, Pro+ at $39 and Max at $100, with Business at $19 per granted seat and Enterprise at $39. Paid plans carry a monthly credit allowance, from 1,500 credits on Pro to 20,000 on Max. The free tier is perpetual and explicit: "GitHub Copilot Free users are limited to 2000 completions and 50 chat requests (including Copilot Edits)." Model access is the broadest reviewed here, though Opus-class and the top GPT tiers are gated to Pro+ and above.

The real limitation: the free cap is hard, not soft. Flex allotment and credit top-ups are both marked "Not included" on Free, so there is no way to spend past 2,000 completions without upgrading. Copilot Free is also unavailable to anyone holding a Business or Enterprise seat, and GitHub's docs state that Copilot "is not currently available for GitHub Enterprise Server."

2. Cursor

The Cursor AI coding assistant made Tab autocomplete a category of its own, and it is still the reference implementation for low-latency multi-line prediction and Cmd+K targeted edits. It is not a plugin. Cursor is a full editor, which is both its strength, since the completion model sees everything the editor sees, and the reason it ranks second.

The pricing page's own structured offer data on cursor.com lists Hobby at $0, Pro at $20 per month, Pro+ at $60, Ultra at $200 and Teams at $40 per user per month. Cursor is also the only vendor in this comparison that publishes a per-model context window: Claude Opus 5 at 300k default and 1M maximum, Claude Sonnet 5 at 200k and 1M, Kimi K3 at 200k and 1M, and the GPT-5.6 family at 272k, alongside in-house Composer 2.5.

The real limitation: the Hobby free tier publishes no numbers at all. Its entire specification is "No credit card required", "Limited Agent requests" and "Access to Composer", and Cursor's own models-and-pricing doc omits Hobby completely, so you cannot plan around it. There is no on-premises option either; the enterprise controls are Privacy Mode, data residency and private source-control access over PrivateLink or Cloudflare Tunnel.

3. JetBrains AI Assistant

If your team writes Kotlin, Java, Python or Go inside IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, GoLand or Rider, the assistant already in the IDE is usually the right answer. JetBrains AI Assistant ships across all JetBrains IDEs and Android Studio, and its completion runs on JetBrains' own Mellum model rather than a third-party API.

Pricing from the jetbrains.com purchase page on 28 August 2026: AI Pro is $10 per month or $100 per year personal, an effective $8.33 per month, and $20 per month or $200 per year commercial; AI Ultimate is $30 personal and $60 commercial. Quota is denominated in AI Credits, and JetBrains states that "Each AI Credit equals $1 USD charged in your local currency", with AI Free at 3 credits per 30 days and AI Pro at 10. Critically, "Code completion and next edit suggestions are powered by JetBrains' tailored models, and therefore do not consume AI quota." AI Enterprise supports air-gapped operation against on-premises llama.cpp, vLLM or LM Studio servers.

The real limitation: the free plan is missing exactly where beginners are. JetBrains states that AI Free "is not available in Android Studio" and not available "in Community Editions of PyCharm and IntelliJ IDEA," so hobbyists on the free IDEs need a paid plan. Unused quota does not roll over, and JetBrains declines to publish the AI Enterprise credit allowance.

4. Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf, formerly Codeium)

This entry needs its provenance up front, because the name changed twice. Searching for the Codeium AI coding assistant or the Windsurf AI coding assistant in 2026 lands you here: windsurf.com returns a 308 redirect to devin.ai, docs.windsurf.com serves a site titled "Devin Docs", and the editor is sold as Devin Desktop under Cognition.

The free tier is the most generous inline-editing offer in this comparison. Devin's pricing page lists Free at $0 with "Unlimited inline edits" and "Unlimited Tab completions", plus "a light quota to code with agents" and "Limited model availability". The comparison table marks free-tier SWE 1.7 as "Slow" and caps Free and Pro alike at one member. Paid plans are Pro at $20 per month, Max at $200, and Teams at $80 per month plus $40 per full developer seat. Models span Cognition's in-house SWE family, including SWE-1-mini dedicated to Tab, alongside frontier models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google.

The real limitation: if you want this as a plugin rather than an editor, you are adopting maintenance-mode software. The legacy Windsurf Plugins for JetBrains, VS Code, Vim and Neovim, Visual Studio, Eclipse and Jupyter are described in Cognition's own docs as being "in maintenance mode." Paid overage is metered rather than capped: extra usage "is consumed at API pricing."

5. Gemini Code Assist

Gemini Code Assist is the Google AI coding assistant for teams, and it is now unambiguously an enterprise product. It installs into VS Code and the JetBrains family and is available by default in Cloud Shell Editor, Cloud Workstations and Android Studio. Its differentiator is context at scale: Google's quota documentation lists "Local codebase awareness - 1,000,000 token context window."

Pricing on codeassist.google as of 28 August 2026: Standard is $19 per user per month on an upfront annual commitment or $22.80 monthly, and Enterprise is $45 annually or $54 monthly. Daily quotas are published rather than hidden: 6,000 code generation and completion requests per day and 960 chat responses per day. The free story changed this summer. Google's own banner states that for the unpaid individual tier, "Gemini Code Assist IDE extensions were replaced by Antigravity CLI and Antigravity on June 18th 2026", and individuals are now routed to Antigravity, whose Individuals tier is $0 with "Unlimited Tab completions" under "Basic weekly rate limits".

The real limitation: there is no free Gemini Code Assist any more, and the daily caps aggregate across every model family, so exhausting them blocks every model at once. Google states that once the daily maximum is reached, "no further requests can be made through these interfaces to any model until the quota resets." Gemini 3.1 Pro additionally requires an administrator to enable the Preview release channel.

6. Zed

Zed earns its place on model economics. It is a native editor with its own edit-prediction model, Zeta2, which Zed describes as "an open-source, open-data language model that predicts what you'll type next." The prediction feature that costs money everywhere else is cheap here because Zed owns the model.

Pricing on zed.dev on 28 August 2026: Personal is "$0 forever" with "2,000 accepted edit predictions" and "Unlimited use with your API keys or external agents". Pro is $10 per month for unlimited edit predictions plus $5 of included tokens, with overage at "API list price +10%". Business is $30 per seat per month with no seat minimum. Local inference is first-class and documented rather than merely tolerated: llama.cpp, Ollama, LM Studio and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. For anyone shopping for a local AI coding assistant that is still a polished commercial product, this is the shortest path.

The real limitation: you have to adopt Zed. There is no VS Code extension and no JetBrains plugin, so the switching cost is the entire evaluation. Zed also gates its best models during evaluation, stating that "Claude Fable, Claude Opus, and GPT Pro models are not available during the free trial."

7. Amazon Q Developer

Amazon Q Developer is the assistant to pick when the codebase and the reviewer both live in AWS. It installs into JetBrains IDEs, VS Code, Visual Studio and Eclipse in preview, and reaches beyond the editor into the AWS Management Console, Slack, Microsoft Teams, GitLab and GitHub.

Pricing on aws.amazon.com on 28 August 2026 is two tiers: a Free Tier at $0 and Pro at $19 per user per month. AWS describes "a perpetual Free Tier with monthly limits available to users logged in as an AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) user or AWS Builder ID user", with published allowances of 50 agentic requests per month and 1,000 lines of code per month for Java upgrade transformation. Pro raises transformation to 4,000 lines pooled at account level, with extra lines at $0.003 each. Those metered legacy-upgrade transforms are the genuine differentiator; no other assistant here sells one as a first-class product surface.

The real limitation: AWS has published an end date. Its own product page states that "On April 30, 2027, AWS will discontinue support for Amazon Q Developer IDE plugins," pointing users toward Kiro instead. On the free tier, IP indemnity is listed as "No" and data collection is "Opt-out available" rather than automatically opted out, which Pro is. AWS publishes neither exact model names nor a context window.

8. Tabnine

The Tabnine AI coding assistant answers one specific question: what do you install when the code physically cannot leave your network. Its site now carries a banner reading "Tabnine has been acquired by Tricentis, the global leader in agentic quality engineering." The product remains focused on private deployment, advertising "SaaS, VPC, on-premises, or fully air-gapped" operation, zero code retention, and IP indemnification subject to terms.

Pricing on tabnine.com on 28 August 2026: the Tabnine Code Assistant Platform is $39 per user per month and the Tabnine Agentic Platform is $59 per user per month, both on annual subscription. The asterisk is worth reading: "Unlimited usage when using your own LLM on-prem or your LLM end point on cloud", with Tabnine-provided model access billed at "actual LLM provider prices + 5% handling fee" on top of the seat cost. Editor support is documented with exact version ranges, covering VS Code, JetBrains 2023.3 through 2026.2, Eclipse and Visual Studio 2022 and 2026 on Windows.

The real limitation: there is no free tier and no monthly billing on Tabnine's published plans, both CTAs are "Get a quote" rather than self-serve checkout, and the $39 assistant tier excludes agentic capability, which starts at $59. If you are one engineer wanting to try it this afternoon, this is not the tool.

9. Tabby

Tabby is the open-source self-hosted option, described by its own repository as "a self-hosted AI coding assistant, offering an open-source and on-premises alternative to GitHub Copilot", and notable for being "self-contained, with no need for a DBMS or cloud service." The core is Apache-2.0, with a separate licence governing the ee/ directory.

Pricing on tabbyml.com on 28 August 2026: Community is free for up to 5 users with code completion, answer engine, inline chat and context providers; Team is $19 per seat per month for up to 50 users; Enterprise is custom. Tabby Cloud adds "$20 in free monthly credits" and states that "Tab Completion is always free. No usage limits, no restrictions." Editor coverage is unusually broad for an open-source project, and you supply the models, with StarCoder, Qwen2.5-Coder, CodeLlama and Codestral documented on CUDA or Apple Metal.

The real limitation: maintenance velocity. The latest published release is v0.32.0 from 25 January 2026, roughly seven months old at the time of writing, with 332 open issues, and the README now points to a separate newer repository named Pochi. If you self-host, you are also on call for it, so read the commit history before committing a team.

  • Standout strength: a genuinely free, genuinely local assistant with no vendor in the loop

10. Sourcegraph Cody

Cody remains a capable enterprise assistant across VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio and Cody Web, backed by Sourcegraph's code-intelligence index, and it can be self-hosted so it runs in your own data centres alongside your self-hosted code hosts. For a large organisation already running Sourcegraph, that combination is hard to beat.

It ranks tenth on availability rather than quality. Per Sourcegraph's own announcement about changes to its Cody plans, new signups for Cody Free and Cody Pro stopped on 25 June 2025 and access ended for those plans on 23 July 2025. Sourcegraph stated at the time that "Cody Enterprise customers are not affected by these changes." Enterprise pricing is not published, and billing is per active user, defined as someone who "is signed in to their Enterprise Sourcegraph account and actively interacts with Cody."

The real limitation: there is no self-serve path left. An individual engineer cannot buy Cody at any price, and Sourcegraph publishes no list price for the tier that remains, so evaluation starts with a sales conversation. Note also that sourcegraph.com returned HTTP 403 to our direct fetches on 28 August 2026, so the facts above come from Sourcegraph's own changelog and documentation URLs rather than a direct read of a pricing page.

11. Qodo

The Qodo AI coding assistant, formerly CodiumAI, is here because engineers still search for it as an assistant and the honest answer is that it has stopped being one. Its documentation now describes the "Qodo IDE plugin, formerly Qodo Gen" as a tool that "brings local code review workflows to JetBrains and VS Code." The review work it does is genuinely strong, and if that is what you want it belongs on a different shortlist alongside the other AI code review tools.

Pricing on qodo.ai on 28 August 2026: a 14-day free trial with unlimited reviews for up to 30 users, then Pro Team from $30 per month on credit packs at $0.012 per credit, where 2,500 credits is roughly 18 reviews per month. Enterprise is custom for 30-plus users and unlocks single-tenant SaaS, on-premises and air-gapped deployment plus bring-your-own-key model access. Qualified open-source projects can apply for free access.

The real limitation: Qodo's own documentation carries the sentence that settles this entry: "Qodo is deprecating its code generation features, including autocomplete and chat-based code generation." Qodo also states directly, "We don't offer a permanent free tier," and credits "expire at the end of each monthly cycle" with no rollover.

12. Augment Code

Augment Code currently holds the top organic result for this query, which is exactly why it needs an honest entry rather than an omission. Its context engine was one of the better repo-aware completion products in the category. What changed is what Augment sells: the company launched Cosmos on 3 June 2026 and its homepage now describes "the platform for building an always-on software delivery system that moves work from spec to verification."

Pricing on augmentcode.com on 28 August 2026: Business is "$100/month flat - no per-seat charge" including $100 of usage across LLM, context engine and compute, with up to 50 seats; Enterprise is custom. Usage is billed at "the provider's public API list price" plus "a flat 40% fee on LLM usage (no fee on compute)". Editor presence covers VS Code, JetBrains and chat-only Vim and Neovim, plus the Auggie CLI. If you are weighing this against the field, we keep a dedicated Augment Code alternatives comparison.

The real limitation: completions are gone for most buyers. Augment's own documentation states that "Support for this feature was deprecated on March 31, 2026 for non-Enterprise plans (the former Indie, Standard, Max, and Legacy plans)." There is no free tier and no trial credit published anywhere on the pricing page, so the cheapest way to try Augment is $100.

Free AI coding assistant tiers: what each one actually limits

Yes, there is a free AI code assistant, and in fact there are eight. The useful question is not whether a free tier exists but which resource it rations: a cap on completions is invisible to a chat-heavy user and fatal to someone who lives on Tab. All figures verified 28 August 2026.

Four products here have no free tier at all as of 28 August 2026: Tabnine, Sourcegraph Cody, Augment Code, and Gemini Code Assist, whose individual tier stopped serving on 18 June 2026. Qodo offers a 14-day trial rather than a permanent free plan.

Our pick for the best free AI coding assistant: if you mostly accept inline suggestions, Devin Desktop Free wins outright, because unlimited Tab comes with no editor restriction attached. JetBrains AI Free is the close second and the better choice if you are already in a paid JetBrains IDE. If you mostly chat, Copilot Free's 50 requests will be gone in a week and you should budget $10.

What is the cheapest AI code assistant available in 2026?

Cheapest depends on whether you will pay anything at all. If the answer is no, Tabby is free forever for up to five users on hardware you already own, and Zed Personal is unlimited when you supply your own API keys, which means you pay model providers directly rather than a seat fee.

If the answer is yes, the cheapest paid AI coding assistant is JetBrains AI Pro on a personal annual plan at $100 per year, an effective $8.33 per month, verified on jetbrains.com on 28 August 2026. GitHub Copilot Pro and Zed Pro tie immediately behind at $10 per user per month.

Five assistants that left the category since 2025

A roundup that lists dead products as live ones is worse than no roundup. If you are working from a shortlist assembled in 2025, five names need updating, all verified 28 August 2026:

  • Codeium and Windsurf are now Devin Desktop. windsurf.com 308-redirects to devin.ai and the docs are titled "Devin Docs". The plugin line survives in maintenance mode.
  • Continue has joined Cursor. continue.dev now serves only an acquisition notice, continue.dev/pricing returns 404, and the GitHub README states the repository "is no longer actively maintained and is read-only for all users" after a final 2.0.0 release. The Apache-2.0 code remains available if you want to fork it.
  • Supermaven has been sunset. Its blog announced the Cursor acquisition on 12 November 2024 and a sunset post on 21 November 2025 offering "free autocomplete inference for existing customers for the foreseeable future" to existing Neovim and JetBrains users only.
  • Sourcegraph Cody Free and Pro ended on 23 July 2025. Only Cody Enterprise remains, quote-only.
  • Mistral Code is now Mistral Vibe for code, and it has moved from IDE assistant to agent, reaching VS Code, JetBrains and Zed over the Agent Client Protocol rather than a first-party extension. Its Pro plan is $14.99 per month with $30 of monthly API credits.

Name the pattern before you sign anything: standalone autocomplete is consolidating into editors and into agent platforms. Prefer vendors whose assistant is the product, or whose assistant ships with an editor you were going to pay for anyway.
